INTERNATIONAL SPY MUSEUM IN WASHINGTON DC

The history of espionage is portrayed by a series of highly interactive, theatrical and immersive exhibits. From the Trojan Horse to the Wilderness of Mirrors, thematic areas include a spy school where you learn tricks of the trade, a view of an Enigma machine set in Bletchley Park, a farmhouse during the French Resistance, a look at popular culture including James Bond, a recreation of part of the Berlin Tunnel, and an OPS center which provides the latest news on intelligence.

The innovative and rich use of materials and finishes would be one of the dominant elements of the museum's design. With the strong support of the client we were able to look at applications for new materials. Thus, the result is an immersive experience which stimulates the senses and brings the themes to life. Among my duties was the development of a comprehensive finish schedule that contained hundreds of specifications as well as organizing a series of binders to contain samples of all the materials in each area.

Initial concept renderings (primarily drawn by me) have proven to be the single most important element in maintaining the design intent. With almost 200 boards, they were an essential part of communicating our ideas to the client and provided guidance throughout the fabrication process. In this manner, supplemented by the thorough research of reference images, the team's design concepts were clearly articulated.

Travel would be an integral part of the design process as the museum's artifact collection was stored in Cleveland, Ohio. This entailed weekly trips for four months during which I created mock ups of the cases using the actual artifacts and the aid of the curatorial team. Working closely with the mount makers, the result is a clean and thoughtful design which integrates the artifacts and props into their appropriate settings.
